Ken, thank you – that is exactly what I need, and it works like a dream! Apologies for the late response, I’ve been away from my desk for a few days. ScreenRefresh End Sub. Thanks, Ken. I hadn’t realised that it’s always going on. In the light of what you say, what I’d love to find is a macro that toggles the squiggly lines on and off. I’m doing a translation at the moment with lots of foreign names with Eastern European characters. There are 25 chapters in this book and I’m making more than one pass, obviously, for each chapter, so cumulatively a macro would save quite a bit of time You cannot actually turn off spell checking, it is always running in background even when ‘Check Spelling as you type’ is cleared.

All this does is make the squiggly line underneath spelling errors non visible. I’ve tried writing one just by recording the keystrokes described above , but it didn’t seem to work, and nor did writing two separate ones, one for on and one for off.

Is this process somehow protected? Got a version of Word that uses the ribbon interface Word or later? This site is for you! If you use an earlier version of Word, visit our WordTips site focusing on the menu interface.

Mick Mick 1, 6 6 gold badges 34 34 silver badges 60 60 bronze badges. That was my first idea, but I couldn’t find any options to disable spellchecking. M4N and Mick in Word don’t know which version you’re using M4N, but I’ve got this handy this is where you find the options when editing a style i. You can also get there from Tools-Language-Set Language on the menu bar, but I’d advise using a specifically designed style for your code inserts. See my edit – that might do the trick.

Modifying the style does not affect the pre-existing paragraphs. To retroactively apply the changes to the existing paragraphs: Right-click the style, Select All xx Instance s , then select the style again to reapply.

I use this method when M4N ‘s answer doesn’t work and it works fine — golimar. You can find detailed answer for each MS Office program at MS Office Support: The spelling and grammar checker isn’t working as expected : In Office , Office , and Office Select the text that you want the spelling and grammar checker to ignore.

Select the Do not check spelling or grammar check box. In Office Select the text that you want the spelling and grammar checker to ignore. After selecting Do not check spelling or grammar check box, I’ve found very useful the option to create a new style from selection: In Word , you can create a special style that is based on the selected text: Right-click the selection, and then click Save Selection as a New Quick Style.

Give the style a name—for example, code—and then click OK. Alfredo Capobianchi Alfredo Capobianchi 31 6 6 bronze badges. No, you can however select it and then assign a specific langugae to it.
